Gerritt Beatty, Jr.

Life after death has been a major topic of discussion since man began to walk the earth. Every culture and religion has their own opinion on what happens when our bodies finally give out. Some say our "spirit" leaves our body and goes somewhere else. Some say these spirits roam the earth looking for peace. Other dogmas teach of the good going to a beautiful place while the evil are tormented in a place of fire and brimstone.

The scientist and pragmatists among us just say we cease to exist.

There are only two forms of consciousness. One is consciousness and other is unconsciousness. That’s it! You can still be among the living and be unconscious. We call this sleeping. This unconscious state does not seem like a long period as we fall asleep and then moments later it seems we are awake. Consciousness means being awake and alert to your surroundings. When we die, those two states of being are still at play. You are either conscious or unconscious. Unconscious in the ground or conscious in some type of heavenly realm.

So, what is the truth? If we look to the Word of God for answers, we do get a picture of what life after death looks like. Unfortunately, the Holy Roman church tried to deceive many with how it treated the translation of Hebrew and Greek in God's scripture. They were definitely trying to paint a picture different from what the books of the Bible really said.

It all started in a Garden in Eden near Mesopotamia.

God had created two human beings and told them they could eat of every fruit in the garden save one. If they ate of the one, they would surely die.

Satan convinced Eve that she would not die if she ate of the forbidden fruit. After she ate it, she did not die! Was Satan right? Not completely, while she did not die right away, she did create a separation from the Creator that led her body to begin the process of decay. There would be no coming back to the well to regenerate her human cells for eternal life as the Tree of Life would have provided. They were driven out of the garden and away from the Tree of Life. Why? Because they disobeyed the Creator.

The Bible does not tell us how long Eve lived but Adam made it to 930. It seems it took him a long time to die. But God decided to adjust the length of time man would dwell on the earth dealing with death. In Genesis 6:3 he stated: “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Do you know anyone who has made it past 120? Genesis 6 was written over 3,000 years ago and still today, no one makes it past 120.

Our sinful flesh can only remain alive in God's presence for so long. I am sure it grieved the Creator to see man's wickedness take over and He determined it would only dwell so long in the land before it became weak and decrepit. But God had a plan to redeem mankind and offer him a life everlasting.

 The Spirit

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7

It is breath that God breathed into us to make us alive. The church changed this word throughout the Bible to spirit, and the ghost of man was born. Even when Jesus was dying on the cross and said to God "into your hands I commit my spirit." the Greek word used here is pneuma which is breath, but the church was trying to get across something else. According to them, Jesus died and his ghostly spirit was released. He even told the thief on the cross that today he would be in paradise with Him. Let's look at that a little more closely.

In the Bible, the scribes who wrote the scriptures did not have punctuation. There were no periods or commas or quotation marks. It was up to the translators of modern times to insert those where necessary for the modern men at the time to read and understand God's Holy Word. Let's look at that passage again using the punctuation that was inserted after 300 AD.

And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43

If we place the comma after "you" like it is in today's translations, it sounds like on that day when they died, Jesus and the thief went to Paradise.

Assuredly, I say to you today, you will be with Me in Paradise.

But if we place the comma after the word "today", it means something completely different. It sounds like Jesus was telling the thief "I tell you today ... you will be with Me in Paradise." meaning that He was telling him today, you will be with me in Paradise at some point in the future.

Do we have any scripture to uphold this point of view? Well, yes, we do. When Jesus rose from the tomb, Mary went to hug Him. What did Jesus say to her?

John 20:17: Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”

So, wait, if He and the thief were in Paradise on the day they both died, why three days later is He saying He has not yet ascended to the Father. Aha! Aha! Had Jesus gone to Paradise like the church tried to get across, the Father would have been hugging and kissing Him for a job well done, right?

The comma was placed after the wrong word in the newer translations. The word spirit was also mistranslated away from breath to some type of ghost version of Jesus that escaped His body at death. This is how we get to our modern-day depiction of when we die, we ascend to heaven but that is not biblical.

Jesus and the Old Testament tell us what happens when we die.

Consider and hear me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Psalm 13:3

At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob, Both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep.

Psalm 76:6

“And I will make drunk Her princes and wise men, Her governors, her deputies, and her mighty men. And they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not awake,” says the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts. Jeremiah 51:57

And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel 12:2

New Testament

He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. Matthew 9:24

When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.” Mark 5:39

These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.” John 11:11

Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—

1 Corinthians 15:51

Therefore, He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” Ephesians 5:14

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 4:14

Lazarus's sister Martha understood this. When Jesus arrived after Lazarus death, she said concerning his resurrection:

John 11:23

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

The word Hell

According to the Bible, Hell is depicted as a fiery place the evil go after they die. If you were a newly organized church and you wanted to corral your followers and insure, they did not get out of line; fear would be a great way to do that. Fear is a great motivator and when used properly can get people subjugated to you right away. What if I told you if you do not sit up and fly right you will find yourself tortured and burning forever. That'll scare the compliance into you... and it did for over fifteen centuries.

The Holy Roman church developed hell to force believers to follow them to avoid torture and fire. They wrote God's Word in Latin so only a few could read it. Many at that time were illiterate and could not read. They burned people at the stake who translated the Bible to English to prevent everyone from reading it for themselves. If this is not reverse censorship, I do not know what it is.

The word hell in the Bible is translated into either the grave or Gehenna which was a place in Jerusalem where the trash was burned. Once trash is burned, it is gone forever. It does not burn and is not consumed. In the Lake of Fire, those who refuse to live with God will be consumed. They will not be burning forever. What kind of God would subject His children to being burned forever? Not one I would believe in or follow. Not a God of Love who gave Himself as a sacrifice so that we might join Him in Paradise.

The whole truth is that when we die, we ALL go the Hell as Hell is the grave.

“The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up. 1 Samuel 2:6

As the cloud disappears and vanishes away, so he who goes down to the grave does not come up. Job 7:9

For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks? Psalm 6:5

Adrift among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, and who are cut off from Your hand. Psalm 88:5

And on and on it goes. All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God. The wages of sin is death. Death in the grave separated from God just like God separated Adam and Eve from the Garden.

One of the most compelling areas of study when it comes to the possibility of life after death is the phenomenon known as Near-Death Experiences (NDEs). These are reported experiences by individuals who have come close to death but survived, often with vivid recollections of their experiences during the process. NDEs typically involve a range of features, including:

  • Out-of-body experiences (OBEs): Many people report feeling as though they are floating above their bodies, observing the scene below.

  • A tunnel or light: A bright, often comforting light at the end of a tunnel is a common feature of NDEs, which some interpret as a gateway to another realm.

  • Life review: Some individuals describe having a panoramic review of their life, experiencing significant moments as if seeing them from a different perspective.

  • Encounters with deceased loved ones or spiritual beings: A number of people report meeting deceased relatives, religious figures, or other entities during their NDEs.

  • Feelings of peace and unconditional love: For many, the experience is overwhelmingly positive, characterized by a sense of profound peace and joy, free of earthly concerns.

Beth was nine years old when she came down with a severe case pneumonia. Her parents were told by doctors that she might die. She recalls saying a prayer to God that she was too sick and was ready to die. In the hospital, she recounts what occurred:

Then, I had an extremely bad pain in my chest. If it had lasted longer, I would have screamed. But then it was gone, and I felt wonderful. I was surrounded by a golden light, and I realized how very easy it was to breathe.

After basking in the glow, my room began to fade into view. I was still lying in my bed. But in the upper right corner of the ceiling, a bright light appeared. It was very small, but began to grow larger and larger. As the light got closer, I could see that it was a man walking toward me.

Finally, after what seemed a long time, he arrived. He was wearing a brown robe and was floating in the air. He had brown hair, a beard, and the most incredible eyes that I had ever seen. He smiled at me, and I smiled back. Then he spoke to me, although we didn’t speak with our voices. We spoke with our minds, and that seemed absolutely normal.

The man said, “Are you ready to die yet?”

Immediately, I said, “Oh no, don’t you know? I’m still a little girl. I haven’t even lived yet.” I then looked away for a minute and thought to myself, That’s strange. You said that you were ready to die.

Another one..

In 1881, a Native American man named Squ-sacht-un of the Squaxin Island Tribe in Washington territory fell ill and, by all appearances, died. His wife began funeral preparations. As Squ-sacht-un later recounted:

My breath was out and I died. All at once I saw a shining light – great light – trying my soul. I looked and saw my body had no soul – looked at my own body – it was dead.

His soul, according to one account, had ascended to a house where a man asked him if he believed in God. Inside the house, he encountered a photograph of himself that somehow revealed all the bad deeds he had committed in life. He then witnessed people he knew being burned in a furnace. Ultimately, he met God and was given a choice between returning to Earth to preach Christianity or going to hell. Before awakening, Squ-sacht-un was shown a beautiful, luminescent world where he experienced feelings of peace and comfort. Squ-sacht-un was transformed by the experience, explaining: ‘I have seen a great light in my soul from that good land; I have understood all Christ wants us to do. Before I came alive, I saw I was sinner.’

Remember, the Bible describes Lucifer as an Angel of light. Just as he told Eve she would not die, so has he been trying to convince the world ever since. You will not die, you will be transformed into a sprit in Heaven. Problem is, this is not Biblical. Nowhere in the Bible does it state that when a man dies, he goes to Heaven in spirit form. Or if he has lived a life of righteousness, he will go to Heaven and if a life of evil, he will go to Hell and burn for eternity.

Satan has been deceiving mankind for thousands of years trying to get them to believe that death is just a gateway to another realm. He has the ability to create these deceptions and take on any form he chooses like Grandma Debbie or Uncle Dave.

Look up the phrase immortal soul in any Bible translation and you will get the following...

Sorry, we didn’t find any results for your search. Please try the following:

  • Double-check spelling, especially people and place names.

  • Make sure there are spaces between words. Bible Gateway treats “nameoftheFather” and “name of the Father” differently.

The immortal soul or spirit of man does not exist in the Bible. If we are to look to the Bible as the source of truth regarding the state of man and his future, we will find what I laid out above.

The Roman Catholic Church promoted this dogma to keep people in line and require their compliance with their teaching and religion. They used the tithe principal in the Bible to get money out of their parishioners and became the most wealthy, powerful group in the Middle Ages. Then they created Purgatory as a place of judgement to satisfy those rich benefactors who could not believe their relatives were in Hell. The church appeased these wealthy donors by telling them your unbaptized mother, father, child was in a place where they could be purified of sins to be welcomed into Heaven.

Once again, nowhere in the Bible is this stated. Why do you think they translated the Bible into Latin and hunted anyone down who tried to translate the scriptures into another language? Look up the history of John Wyclif and William Tyndale and their attempts at translating the Bible into a language the common man and woman could read and understand.

If I wrote the secret to how to become rich in the language of Swahili and then forced people to pay me large sums of money over many years to get little bits and pieces of this knowledge that really never made them rich, wouldn’t you want to learn Swahili so you could read it for yourself and uncover the truth?

This is precisely what the Roman church did. They rewrote the Bible to fit their narrative and extract money out of less educated folk to follow their rituals and rules for living. After all, everyone wanted to go to Heaven when they die. Well these guys knew how to get me there. A way to bypass Purgatory and go direct to Heaven and collect $200. (Monopoly game reference)

In the 1500’s, the Roman church began selling indulgences. These were practices that granted remission of punishment from sins committed. Here was another genius way to extract more money from the sheep for the church’s coffers. A man by the name of Martin Luther objected to this practice. He argued that salvation comes from God's grace through faith, not through financial transactions. He nailed a document called the 95 Theses to the doors of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. He was a college professor of Theology at the time and this new scheme by the Catholic Church had gone too far. His actions led to the Protestant Reformation where a whole new branch of Christianity was created. Baptist, Methodist and Lutheran churches are some examples of these offshoots.

Death is sleep in the grave. Only God can wake us up. And He will because He loves us sooo much. So much so that He sent His Son to die a terrible death on the cross so that we could be redeemed and have a shot at eternal life.

Jesus rose from the grave with his physical body just like we will when He returns to repossess us who have become lost to sin. This has been the plan all along. Martha, Lazarus's sister understood this. One key thing to take away here is that Jesus rose with his physical body. There are humans in Heaven now and all of them are in their physical body, not spiritual ones.

So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:23

Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 2 Kings 2:11

Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Jude 1:9

And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. Mark 9:4

In the Book of Kings, Elijah was taken up to Heaven in his human bodily form. This would mean Elijah never experienced death. Many humans on this earth will experience this same thing when Jesus returns as they will be caught up with Him and will never taste death.

So according to the Bible, Enoch, Elijah, Moses and Jesus are in Heaven in their physical bodies awaiting the time when God will restore the Kingdom to its once glorious place on Earth. What a wonderful day that will be.

The Bible does not mention any spiritual humans in Heaven. But what about the Martyrs mentioned in Revelation 6 and the Elders in Revelation 7??

Well, we read in Matthew 27

51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

Notice that they were asleep in the grave. Could these saints that were raised at Jesus death be the Martyrs mentioned in Revelation 6 or the Elders mentioned in Revelation 7? Remember, Revelation was written by John around ~ 90AD which would have been sixty years after Jesus crucifixion. The Bible is not clear on where these people hail from. Based on the physical resurrection of humans, I would doubt these martyrs or Elders are spiritual beings but in fact would be of physical in nature just like Enoch and Elijah.

According to the Word of God, when we die, we go to sleep. As with sleep, the night goes by very fast and the next instant we are awake as if only a few minutes have passed. Abraham, David, Solomon and Israel (Jacob) have been asleep for centuries but for them at the resurrection, it will only seem like a few moments have passed by. The same will be true for my grandmother and all my other forefathers. Those who seek the Lord will be resurrected to eternal life. Those who only seek to satisfy themselves and reject God will also be resurrected only to find themselves tossed into the Lake of Fire to be utterly destroyed forever. They will exist no more.

Let me describe this in a different way. As a man or a woman, we desire to be joined with a mate. This eliminates loneliness. If we have infinite resources and an entire country to fill, we desire to have children. These children bring us joy and happiness. We seek a community of mutual respect, love and happiness. We do this by implementing rules all of us are expected to follow. Rules that govern a community of joy, trust, and compassion. If anyone breaks any of these rules, we counsel them on why the rule is in place and beseech them to follow it. If they continue to break the rules, something much harsher must be delivered.

As parents, we do this with time outs, loss of privileges, solitary confinement, and even physical pain through spanking. In our society, we use fines, loss of privileges, jail time and even corporal punishment in the way of death by lethal injection. Even with all of these negative consequences, we still have crime running amok. What are parents to do? If their children whom they love very much just refuse to love and respect each other, then banishment has to be the only option.

Past civilizations have tried this to only moderate success. The only way to eliminate these evil tendencies once and for all is to completely separate these people from life itself. If they will not embrace a world of love, peace and mutual respect, they cannot continue to be a part of the community. If left to a harsh wilderness with loneliness, no food or resources, death would be a blessing.

Remember, these are your children. You want all of them to be a part of your life. Each one with different skills, abilities and likes. You enjoy all of them, especially at family gatherings. You do not want to lose any of them.

Now imagine you have eternal life, but your children do not. Those who have followed the rules will one day join you in a new land unlike anything anyone has ever seen. Those who have not will be vanquished and denied life itself. When they die, they remain buried in the ground until you come to call them home. (Imagine if they ascended as spirits to your celestial home. You could not hug them as they would be like ghosts.) God does not welcome ghosts into His heavenly realm.

God is a loving God and knows life without Him is utter hell. We are experiencing it today with people killing each other, disease taking out millions, earthquakes and storms killing children and destroying property. But today we have some assemblance of hope in God and He does intervene from time to time to save His children from calamity. But imagine a world where that hope will never exist. Where the forces of nature, disease and lawless men are allowed to run amok with no resistance.

This is a world without God and one no one could survive in it. Instead of placing the evil people of our world into this one, God in His mercy removes them completely from existence as He knows no one would want to live in that world of chaos and destruction. One where Satan's fury and anger would have no leash.

The story above about your children is what God the Father is contending with. He loves Lucifer but Lucifer could not adhere to the rules and has been banished from Heaven. I am sure God has pleaded with him but according to Scripture, Lucifer was able to convince one third of his fellow heavenly brethren to join him. He was just that proud and charismatic. There is just no other remedy to this situation other than eternal unconsciousness.

I asked ChatGPT to give me an explanation about what happens when we die. Here is their response.

Though no definitive proof of life after death exists, the evidence in favor of its possibility is both intriguing and thought-provoking. From near-death experiences to reincarnation memories, from scientific exploration of consciousness to philosophical arguments for the persistence of the soul, the question remains open. As science continues to probe the mysteries of consciousness, and as personal experiences continue to inspire belief, the possibility that life after death exists—whether in the form of reincarnation, spiritual continuation, or another unknown state—persists as a central question of human existence.

When I referenced the Bible, it produced the following and subsequent passages to back up this idea.

According to the Bible, death is not the end. The soul survives, judgment follows, and eternal destinies are assigned. For believers, death is described as going home to be with the Lord. For unbelievers, it is the beginning of separation from God, culminating in final judgment.

  • “The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”Ecclesiastes 12:7

  • To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” — 2 Corinthians 5:8

  • In the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31), the rich man dies and finds himself in a place of torment and awareness.

Remember in the Bible the spirit is breath and it is God who gives it. The spirit or breath that God gave returns to Him. To say this spirit is an apparition would mean that it existed in Heaven prior to being placed in a physical being. Do you remember being in Heaven?

I don’t. God created the creature and formed it into a specific species. He then breathed life into it and it became a “living” creature.

It would only make sense that the breath would return to God once we die as without breath we cannot live here on Earth.

Another concept laid out was that it was better being with Jesus than being alive here on Earth.

Yes, we all agree it is better to be with Jesus. However. in this passage in 2 Corinthians, Paul is saying that this body, if destroyed has a replacement in Heaven. We long to be in that body rather than the one we have. We seek to have mortality swallowed up by life and God has guaranteed this through Jesus. While in this human body, we are absent from the Lord. We long to be with the Lord which is absent from this human body. But he states in verse 10 that we must all appear before judgement for the things done in the human body. We wish to put on the new creation which is from the Lord.

One cannot take a single passage to prove there is life after death. We have to understand the context the passage is written in. Kinda like if I said “Jane flew to Europe”. This phrase alone may make it seem like Jane is either a super hero or has wings to fly. But if we read the full passage “Jane boarded an airplane and Jane flew to Europe”, we get a better sense of what occurred. The same is true here, we have to read the entire passage to understand the context of what Paul is saying.

The same is true of Luke 16. In the story of the Rich man and Lazarus, we see a place called Abraham’s bosom, translated as Heaven or Paradise and Hades burning with fire. This is probably the lone passage that was the source of the Holy Roman church’s position on what happens when we die and they promoted the hell out of it.

Hades was a god of the underworld and the place Greeks considered the place of the dead. It was the unseen realm to which the souls of the dead go upon leaving the world as well as any and all things beneath the earth. To help the listeners of this story better understand it, Jesus had to use something the people of his time would recognize. It starts out talking about the Pharisees who were lovers of money and justified themselves among the men of the city. But God knew their hearts and they were an abomination to Him.

To reiterate this in another way, He explained the parable of Lazarus and the Rich man. The rich man depicted in this story was the Pharisees who were arrayed in fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. They were to preach the Abrahamic traditions which meant looking after your fellow man but they did not do this but promoted the Law instead and set themselves above everyone else. A poor man named Lazarus died and so did this Rich man. What was to become of the two of them was not that one went to Heaven and one went to Hell but that the two had two different outcomes. In Greek culture, everyone rich and poor went to Hades or the underworld.

But in this passage, Lazarus was carried to Abraham’s bosom which meant he became one with Father Abraham and the blessing Abraham would one day enjoy while the Rich man (Pharisee) went to the underworld because he did not do what his Abrahamic religion taught. The underworld is depicted as a place of darkness and many combined the fiery place of hell and associated it with Hades. Hence the flame in Hades.

This is not a depiction of life after death. The story is a cautionary tale about prioritizing wealth over compassion and faith in God's word.

In summation, there are twelve biblical passages stating that death is a sleep. ChatGPT was only able to provide three passages that somewhat promoted an existence in Heaven after death. If there were twelve eyewitnesses that Johnny stole the car and three who said he did not, what would you believe? I would go with the twelve and say Johnny is guilty.

This thing called life is a wacky thing. We have been trying to understand it for thousands of years. We still cannot come to a consensus all these many years later. If we believe in an all-powerful, supernatural being who created everything, then you would think He would have made contact with us and help us understand why we were created in the first place.

If you believe we just evolved out of nothing and there is no God controlling everything, well then life after death is just going to be unconsciousness and nonexistence. This provides no hope or prospect of overcoming this difficult, violent, meaningless existence here on Earth. It encourages kill or be killed, every man for himself mentality. We have seen that play out. It never ends well. Julius Caesar thought this way and he was killed by his “friends”.

If you do not believe in the Bible or God, all I can offer is that a book that has survived over 3,000 years and been through so many language translations and has spawned over billions of believers should at least be read. Kinda like War and Peace but with a much happier ending.

The whole truth is this. Man was created by God to live in Paradise with Him. In order to live in harmony with Him, we must be obedient to His words for they are life itself. If we cannot abide by these words, we must be separated like goats from the sheep. In His mercy, He knows we cannot live without Him as He is the LIFE. Nonexistence or unconsciousness is better than a world without God.

Don't be a goat. The Great Shepherd has come to retrieve us and gave His life so that we may be reunited with the One who created us to live with Him in Paradise as was ordained from the beginning of time. Adam and Eve will finally be able to eat from the Tree of Life.

You can choose to believe it or not. I “hope” you choose to believe as I have.

And THAT is the Whole Truth.

Don't let the deceiver instruct you otherwise. I want to spend eternity with you.

May God truly bless you in your ongoing walk with Him.

And remember, God always answers His kneemail.

Amen? Yes Amen...See you on the Sea of Glass

-Gerritt
