Gerritt Beatty is working on becoming an Eagle Scout, but to take one of the final steps he needs some help from the community.

​

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program, formerly the Boy Scouts of America. It’s an accomplishment about 4% of all Scouts since 1911 have earned, and it only comes after the Scout completes a public service project and undergoes a lengthy review process.

Gerritt’s project is installing a first responders memorial at the Ventura County Firefighting Training Center in Camarillo.

With COVID-19, attending meetings and activities on Zoom was especially challenging for younger Cub Scouts.

​

“The challenge that we’re seeing in Scouting is that there are people getting pulled in many different directions,” said Gerritt Beatty, assistant scoutmaster and volunteer with the Ventura County Council.

​

With fewer younger kids signing up, not as many Scouts are reaching the rank of Eagle. Recruitment had always been a challenge, and over the years, the troop has not been bringing in more kids than they are losing.

​

Despite the years of declining membership, national BSA numbers seem to be rising. Families might be recognizing the benefits of Scouting, where kids can learn skills for outdoor survival, financial management, public speaking and first aid— things many children are not exposed to in school.

“Right now, we’re on path to nationally have the first-time membership growth, I think in decades, this year,” Villalobos said.

Scouting not only teaches life skills, but often leads to lifelong friendships, especially within a troop, where boys—and now girls—grow up together, local Scout leaders say.

Few events encapsulate the spirit of the Boy Scouts of America like Camporee.

An annual tradition dating back to 1920 in Ventura County, Camporee generally brings together troops in a city or local region for a weekend of skills learning and testing, friendly competition and camaraderie.

SCOUTING OUT NEW SUPPLY—Scouts from Newbury Park’s BSA Troop 711 held a blood drive April 22 at the Red Cross blood center in Camarillo. Lucas Nave, above center, the 17-year-old Scout in charge of the drive, said the six hour event was well-attended, with community members and Scout leaders and families signing up to donate. 

Two Boy Scout Troops showed up recently at the Thousand Oaks Mall parking lot to help serve their community. Troops 765 and 787 collected donations from local residents for Foodshare of Ventura County.
